Review Asus RT-AX55

Hey guys, meet the cheapest WiFi 6 router from Asus yet. RT-AX55 is powered by 1.5GHz quad-core processor. Supports both MU-MIMO and OFDMA technology. Loaded with AiProtection Classic network security powered by Trend Micro. And compatible with Asus AiMesh WiFi system. It comes with 4 Gigabits LAN ports and 1 WAN port. 2 X 2 wireless connection. Having 128MB Flash and 256MB of RAM.

How does it perform?

Installation is very simple. Just follow the on-screen instruction will do. Everything is almost the same as other Asus wireless router setup. AX55 is packed with essential and useful stuff. Yes, it is loaded with easy to navigate ASUSWRT GUI.

The best and must-have feature – AiMesh. This is the latest 2.0 version by the way. A lot of configuration can be done now. Followed by the usual guest network for those needed. AiProtection with Trend Micro that protects you from viruses and useful parental controls. A simple version QoS that does the job. And other tools like checking Internet connection speed.

Advanced Settings

Besides that, there are advanced settings. For example, IPTV support for UniFi, Maxis and many more. Yes, this budget router even supports dual WAN. Amazon Alexa is supported as well for those needed. IPv6 is there. No worry. Followed by VPN. Both server and client modes are supported. Useful Instant Guard is there too. Another must-have feature – firewall. Lastly, a lot of operation modes for you and me.

Select the mode that matches your situation will do. Excellent coverage and performance for Wi-Fi 6. FYI, laptop with 2×2 Intel AX200 card was being used here. Almost 500 Mbps when close to the router. Slower than I expected. Is Asus limit the speed by software? And 400 Mbps at the farthest place on the 1st floor. Surprisingly, ground floor performance is even better with the same distance.

FYI, wireless AX performance is slightly faster than wireless AC at the same place. AX55 can cover whole double storey semi-D house on WiFi 5 easily too. Yes, budget routers can’t even get 5 GHz signal at end of the kitchen. Again, maximum transfer rate is slower than usual when close to the router. Around 300 Mbps at the farthest place on the 1st floor. As usual, ground floor performance is slower which is expected.

But still much better than your ISP free bundled wireless router. LAN performance is excellent. Getting maximum speed at 940 Mbps easily. AiMesh wireless backhaul performance is excellent for the price. FYI, the main AX55 is located on 1st floor and another AX55 as the node on the ground floor. Yes, this is the performance you get with laptop through LAN cable. WiFi 6 performance doubled when AiMesh is being used. Getting 200 Mbps at end of the kitchen now. 10X performance increased for WiFi 5 devices. That’s outstanding!!!

Conclusion

Well, that’s all for Asus RT-AX55 review. A budget yet performing WiFi 6 router. Wide coverage with fast transfer rate. Do get 2 units for even wider and faster performance with AiMesh technology.
