Review D-Link DIR-X1870

Hey guys, meet EXO AX AX1800 Wi-Fi 6 Router by D-Link. DIR-X1870 is loaded with 1,200 Mbps on the 5 GHz band and 600 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band. Latest WPA3 wireless security, OFDMA and MU-MIMO are supported. Comes with 4 Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports and 1 Gigabit Ethernet WAN port. It also supports D-Link WiFi Mesh that lets you expand wireless coverage easily.

How does it perform?

Let’s find out… Installation is very simple. Just follow the on-screen instruction through the GUI. You can use D-Link Wi-Fi mobile app too. In short, you need to set up Internet Service Provider, Wi-Fi SSID and admin account. That’s all. You can use D-Link Wi-Fi app or the web interface to configure the wireless router. Easy and simple to navigate. Alright, let’s have a look at the features. You have the important IPv6 on top of the usual IPv4.

VLAN is supported as well. A lot of ISP can be selected including Digi, Maxis, Time and TM Unifi. Configure the wireless to separate both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Enable Wi-Fi Mesh to expand wireless coverage with additional nodes. Smart Connect is the default then. Yes, guest network is supported too. Followed by the Network settings. And D-Link Cloud for those who need them. It supports 2 operation modes – Router mode and Extender mode.

That’s not the end. It has a lot of useful features like Parental Control. QoS Engine that assigns Internet access priority to your devices. Yes, you can check Internet speed there too. Firewall is there. No worry. Just enable those rules that you want will do. There are port forwarding, virtual server and static routes as well. As usual, take your time to enable and configure those needed. Dynamic DNS is supported for those who run a virtual server.

Lastly, VPN is there. You can access the Internet securely now through VPN tunnel. Great coverage and performance for WiFi 6. FYI, laptop with 2×2 Intel AX200 card was being used here. Easily go past 650 Mbps when close to the router. And 450 Mbps at the farthest place on the 1st floor. Ground floor performance is slower but still performing great.


For comparison, wireless AX performance is 10% faster than wireless AC at the same place. For WiFi 5, a smartphone with 2×2 connection was being used. Yes, EXO can cover double storey semi-D house on 5 GHz band.

And you can get 600 Mbps easily when close to the router. Over 300 Mbps at the farthest place on the 1st floor. As usual, ground floor performance is slower which is expected. But still better than your ISP free bundled wireless router. As for LAN performance, it is excellent.

Getting maximum speed at 940 Mbps easily as you can see. In short, D-Link DIR-X1870 has great coverage and performance for the price. A nice Wi-Fi 6 mesh router with a lot of useful features for 500 Mbps Internet plan.
